Pride and Solidarity

Pride and Solidarity is a jam-packed evening that will trace the histories and current of queer political movements in Canada and the United States, and the engagement of workers, artists and unions fighting for social justice.

Opening the evening, Hannah in Bedlam, a monologue written and performed by acclaimed Toronto artist christina starr.

Two documentary films by award-winning filmmaker Nancy Nicol will be screened, which capture the victories and struggles for same-sex relationship recognition and marriage in Canada and the United States.

Politics of the Heart (68min, 2005) is a moving portrait of lesbian and gay families who profoundly re-shaped the cultural, political and legal landscape of Quebec and Canada by fighting for recognition of their relationships and their families.

One Summer in New Paltz
(54 min, 2008) is a cautionary tale of a young mayor of a small village who decided to do the unthinkable, set against a backdrop of the Bush administration’s policy of endless war and assault on civil liberties.

A question and answer period will close the program, including Nancy Nicol and Fred Hahn. Fred was elected Secretary Treasurer of CUPE Ontario in 2006, making him the first openly gay man to be elected to a full-time officer position in CUPE Ontario.

Co-presented with ~Night at the Indies~. Co-sponsored by CAW Queer Caucus, CUPE Ontario Pink Triangle Committee, OPSEU Rainbow Alliance, and Elementary Teachers of Toronto Political Action Committee.

Music - Elizabeth Fischer & Tony Wilson

Canadian singer/songwriter of Métis heritage, Janet Panic is a veteran of the Vancouver music scene. A co-founder of 10 Ft Henry, her music has really developed since she struck out on her own. Her earlier CD "The Girl Who Passed For Normal" will be followed by the release of "You Look Good Naked" to be released before the summer.

~Night at the Indies~ Vancouver - Elizabeth FischerElizabeth Fischer:
A recognized vocalist, composer and lyricist, Elizabeth Fischer is the singer in DarkBlueWorld, who are about to release their second CD. She has recorded and performed with internationally reknowned musicians, led the noted art-rock band Animal Slaves in the 80's, loves Hungarian songs and French chansons, and continues to explore the music of Brecht/Weill and Hans Eisler in a number of contexts. Recently she was featured on an on-air concert of the songs of Leonard Cohen on CBC radio. She is also a cutting edge new media artist whose work has been internationally exhibited and a published poet who values the literary element of song structures.

"Songs that ache with truth"
~ The Globe and Mail

"... songs visceral and enraged and yet with tenderness and naked vulnerability"
~ The Georgia Straight

"With her cigarette-rough voice, Fischer invites comparison to Nico or Patti Smith, though her superior range and color indicate that the similarity has more to do with persona than sound. The slow burning anger in these songs is hardly apparent at first, but finally surfaces as defiance rather than cynicism. It is the sound of a damaged romantic"
~ JunkMedia

~Night at the Indies~ Vancouver - Tony WilsonTony Wilson:
Vancouver's Coastal Jazz and Blues hails Tony Wilson as "unquestionably one of the most original guitar stylists on the Canadian scene". Down Beat Magazine entitles him as "...a talismanic West Coast figure." Tony won a West Coast Music Award with his band Video Barbeque and released the critically acclaimed 'Lowest Note' in 2001, which went on to become a pick of the year in the Globe and Mail. Tony's current sextet is turning heads after recent successful appearances at this year's Guelph and Vancouver Jazz Festivals. Tony's compositions have been played by artists as diverse as the NOW Orchestra, The Hard Rubber Orchestra, Myra Melford, Kokoro Dance, Marilyn Crispell, François Houle and Zubot & Dawson.

"...heartfelt, mercurial, and inspired"
~ The Georgia Straight

"wonderful and exotically quirky"
~ Exclaim!

"fearless music-making that spits in the face of too-polite conservatism"
~ textura
