SALTY SNOW
experimental film, 9mins, 2007

SALTY SNOW thematises the yearning for a child. The film reflects on the innate human need to breed, to create things new. As hopes, expectations and disappointments become interwoven, life feels fragile and vulnerable, and, at times, the shared sorrow is experienced separately.

SWAN SONG
experimental film, 6min 20sec, 2004

Swan Song is a video work discussing the experience of interaction and independence, and the feeling of being rejected.

Swan Song is a nature drama in three acts. It starts with the mating dance of swans then shows their copulation, and finally the idyllic family scene, which is about to break up. This is the film's way to demonstrate the power struggle and the sexual desire between woman and man. Even procreation is a part of this power struggle. Swan Song is a comment on natural selection. It suggests that reproduction cannot be taken for granted. Man cannot control the nature. Swan Song discusses the dependence between parents and children, which lies in their fear of being rejected.

Music - John Pippus

Canadian singer/songwriter John Pippus has written songs in genres that span: rock, folk, blues, pop, and country. In addition to writing well over 150 of his own songs, he has co-written songs with both award-winning and up-and-coming writers such as Trooper's Ra McGuire (Vancouver), Angela Lauer (Nashville), Ivan Boudreau (Vancouver), Kacy Crowley (Austin), Aaron Joyce (Vancouver), Tim Shean (Nashville), Karina Morin (Montreal/Vancouver), Chris Aaron (Denver).

Releasing a first full-length album at an age when most people are browsing the last-minute cruise line deals and senior's rates specials takes some kind of nerve. Or passion. Or both. Although playing guitar and performing since the age of 12 (around the same time the Beatles hit it big in America), it's taken this long for John Pippus to get around to recording and releasing a collected dozen of his 100+ original songs. "Myspace, Facebook, and other networking sites have been good places to post singles and get people listening and commenting - and sometimes buying," Pippus says. "As a result, I haven't felt the strong need to have a full-length CD out there - until now". For more information about John visit johnpippus.com or myspace.com/johnpippus

Pride and Solidarity

Tuesday April 28, 7-10 pm, $5-$10 s/s
Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, 12 Alexander Street

~Night at the Indies~ and Mayworks co-present:<br />
Pride and Solidarity

Pride and Solidarity is a jam-packed evening that will trace the histories and current of queer political movements in Canada and the United States, and the engagement of workers, artists and unions fighting for social justice.

Opening the evening, Hannah in Bedlam, a monologue written and performed by acclaimed Toronto artist christina starr.

Two documentary films by award-winning filmmaker Nancy Nicol will be screened, which capture the victories and struggles for same-sex relationship recognition and marriage in Canada and the United States.

Politics of the Heart (68min, 2005) is a moving portrait of lesbian and gay families who profoundly re-shaped the cultural, political and legal landscape of Quebec and Canada by fighting for recognition of their relationships and their families.

One Summer in New Paltz
(54 min, 2008) is a cautionary tale of a young mayor of a small village who decided to do the unthinkable, set against a backdrop of the Bush administration’s policy of endless war and assault on civil liberties.

A question and answer period will close the program, including Nancy Nicol and Fred Hahn. Fred was elected Secretary Treasurer of CUPE Ontario in 2006, making him the first openly gay man to be elected to a full-time officer position in CUPE Ontario.

Co-presented with ~Night at the Indies~. Co-sponsored by CAW Queer Caucus, CUPE Ontario Pink Triangle Committee, OPSEU Rainbow Alliance, and Elementary Teachers of Toronto Political Action Committee.
