Help support our Artist Community
Welcome to ~Night at the Indies~ - home to independent artists of all genres.
Our mission is to celebrate art, build community, and create revenue for independent artists while having fun!
Mandate:
~Night at the Indies~ is a multi-disciplinary monthly arts festival that celebrates the independent artist. Founded in 2005 by independent filmmakers at Meow Films and the Toronto Women's Bookstore, ~Night at the Indies~ is Canada's unique and growing independent arts festival. The Indies Festival was built on the premise that artists need a community in which collaborate on common goals such as the need for living wages, production mentoring and promotional support. Indies Festival goals are to support independent artists in establishing that community via monthly events, create revenues streams for artists, and to bring marginalized independent arts culture onto centre stage.
"The expansion of ~Night at the Indies~ is an important step in this initiative's growth and will enable youth and filmmakers beyond Toronto to benefit from the unique opportunity to collaborate, share knowledge and experience, and to develop professional networks and mentor / contacts with other artists and filmmakers". "There really is nothing like ~Night at the Indies~ happening anywhere else in Toronto. This initiative fills a gap in existing community work and amongst artists by providing space for young and emerging artists to connect and collaborate while encouraging real grassroots development of arts communities."
~ Tia Dafnos, Chairperson, Youth Action Network
"Please keep me up-to-date with all the upcoming ~Night at the Indies~. They have always been amazing!"
~ Rachel Punwassie, audience member
Who We Are:
~Night at the Indies~ was established in 2005 as a non-profit artist collective in Toronto. ~Night at the Indies~ Vancouver was launched in 2008. We hope to start a collective in Montreal and Halifax in 2009 and in Winnipeg in 2010. In 2011 we intend to expand internationally. Click here to learn more about our organization.
Overview:
The main objective of our monthly multi-media events is to showcase a combination of independent films, local spoken word performances, music, photography and other art forms, focusing on artists who are ethnic minorities, women, youth, people of colour, lesbian/gay/bi/trans, differently-abled, and from first nations and other marginalized communities. When possible artists attend the events to share their art and provide audience members with an opportunity to converse about their creative process, challenges, rewards, etc. Each event includes film and other art forms involving issues of homophobia, social concerns, oppression and human rights issues that have inspired artists to take a stance.
When:
~Night At The Indies~ is a monthly event generally held the last Tuesday of each month (in Toronto) and every second Wednesday (in Vancouver). We enjoy collaborating and co-sponsoring with other artist communities.
